Almost every blocked drain call starts the same way: the water goes down slower than it did last week, then one day it does not go down at all. What happens between those two moments decides whether this is a twenty-minute job or a much larger one, because most of the damage we are called to fix was done by someone trying to help.
Here is what actually works, what quietly makes it worse, and how to tell when the blockage has stopped being something you can reach.
First, work out which drain is actually blocked
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that tells you almost everything. Go around the house and run every fixture: kitchen sink, bathroom basin, shower, laundry tub, then flush the toilet.
- One fixture is slow, the rest are fine. The blockage is local, somewhere between that fixture and where its waste pipe joins the main line. This is the one worth having a go at.
- Two or more are slow. They share a line, and the blockage is downstream of both. Nothing you do at the plughole will reach it.
- Everything is slow, or the lowest drain in the house is backing up. That is the main sewer line. Stop here.
That five-minute check is the difference between a job you can do with a plunger and one where a plunger will do nothing at all except tire you out, and it is the first thing we ask on the phone when someone calls a blocked drain plumber in Vaucluse.
Blocked at one particular fixture?
Everything below applies to any drain in the house. If the five-minute check above has told you it is one fixture, each of these goes further than this guide can on that one: the specific causes, where the blockage actually sits, and what reaches it.
- Blocked shower drain — hair bound with soap scum, and why nearly all of it sits in the first 150 millimetres.

Four things worth trying
1. A proper plunge, once
Most people plunge wrong. Fill the sink or basin with enough water to cover the rubber cup completely: a plunger moves water, not air, and without water over it you are just making noise. Block the overflow hole with a wet cloth, because that is where your pressure escapes. Then push and pull firmly for about twenty seconds.
If it is going to work, it usually works in that first session. Have one honest go. If the water has not moved, stop, repeat plunging on a blockage that is not shifting tends to compact it further down the pipe rather than break it up.
2. Hot water and detergent, for a kitchen sink
Kitchen blockages are overwhelmingly congealed fat with food caught in it. Hot tap water and a good squirt of dishwashing liquid, left to sit for fifteen minutes, will soften a fatty blockage that is still forming. It is not a miracle, but it is free and it does no harm.
3. Clearing the trap under a sink
The U-bend under a basin or sink is the single most common place for a blockage, and it is designed to come apart. Put a bucket underneath, unscrew the two collars by hand, and tip out what is in there. It is unpleasant and it is usually the whole problem.
If you take the trap off and it is clear, that is genuinely useful information: the blockage is further down the wall, past anything you can get to.
4. A hand auger, gently, on a basin or shower
A cheap hand auger, a coiled spring you wind down the waste, will reach a metre or two past the trap and is the right tool for a hair clog in a shower or basin. Feed it in slowly, turn the handle when you feel resistance, and let the coil do the work. If you are leaning on it, stop.
What it will not do is reach a main line, and that is where people get into trouble: forcing a long auger down an inspection opening you cannot see into means working blind against pipe that may already be cracked. On the older earthenware around here, that is how a blockage becomes an excavation.
Does baking soda and vinegar actually work?
Short answer: almost never, and it is the most confidently repeated bad advice on the internet. Every second guide tells you to tip in half a cup of bicarb and a cup of vinegar and wait for the fizz.
Here is what is actually happening. Bicarb is a base, vinegar is an acid, and the two neutralise each other: the dramatic foam is carbon dioxide. It is a real reaction, but it happens in an open pipe with nowhere to build pressure, so the mechanical force on the blockage is close to nil. Thirty seconds later you are left with salty water sitting on top of the same clog.
It can loosen a light film of soap scum in a drain that is only just slowing down. It will not shift congealed fat, a hair mat, or anything involving roots. If your drain is genuinely blocked and this worked, it was going to clear on its own.
Four things that make it worse
These come up on jobs constantly, and each one turns a straightforward clear into a bigger bill.
- Caustic drain cleaners. They generate heat sitting against one spot in the pipe, they rarely dissolve the actual blockage, and they turn the standing water into something genuinely dangerous. If they do not work, the next person to open that trap, you or us, gets a bucket of caustic soda on their hands.
- A wire coat hanger. It scratches the pipe wall, and every scratch is somewhere the next blockage starts. In an old earthenware line it can catch a joint and open it up.
- Pushing a snake hard. A hand auger is fine for a sink trap. Forcing one into a main line you cannot see means you are working blind against pipe that may already be cracked.
- Plunging a toilet repeatedly. Past the first attempt, you are compacting the blockage into the S-bend, not moving it.
Four signs the blockage is in the line, not the drain
This is the part worth knowing, because it is what separates a blockage from a problem. Any one of these means the issue is in the line, not at the fixture.
- Other fixtures gurgle. Flush the toilet and the shower waste burbles? Those two are talking to each other through a partly blocked shared line. Air is being pulled through a water seal because it cannot move through the pipe.
- The toilet level rises and falls on its own. A pan that breathes is responding to pressure changes further down the sewer. Nothing in the toilet itself causes that.
- It blocks after heavy rain. Stormwater getting into a cracked sewer overloads it. The blockage is a symptom; the crack is the problem.
- It keeps coming back. A drain that blocks every few weeks is not a drain that needs clearing again. Something in the line is catching debris, roots at a joint, a sagging section holding water, or scale narrowing an old pipe.
Why drains around Vaucluse block the way they do
A fair bit of the housing stock here predates PVC, which means original earthenware sewer lines running in short sections with mortared joints. Those joints were never watertight in the way a modern pipe is, and a tree root only needs a seam of moisture to find its way in.
Add the gardens. The mature figs, camphor laurels and paperbarks that make these streets what they are also have root systems that have had fifty or sixty years to work along the sewer line. We cut roots out of drains here more than any other single cause, and the pattern is consistent: the blockage sits at a joint, four to eight metres from the house, under whatever has been growing there longest.
The other local factor is fall. Plenty of the harbour-side blocks are steep, and where a line has been extended or rerouted during a renovation, it is not unusual to find a section that runs flat or backfalls slightly. Water sits in it, solids settle, and that spot becomes the place everything catches from then on.
None of that is fixed by clearing the blockage. It is fixed by finding out which of those three it is, which is why a camera goes down the line on any drain that has blocked more than once. When we clear blocked drains in Vaucluse, the recurring ones almost always end with footage rather than a guess.
When a blocked drain is actually an emergency
How to stop it happening again
Nobody wants a maintenance lecture, so here is only the part that changes outcomes. Most of what we clear was preventable by one of these.
- Put a strainer in every waste. A three-dollar mesh basket in the kitchen sink and the shower stops most of what we pull out. It is the single highest-return thing on this list.
- Fat goes in the bin, not the sink. Running hot water after it does not solve anything: it just moves the problem four metres down the pipe where it cools and sets anyway. Wipe the pan out with paper first.
- Nothing labelled flushable is flushable. Wipes leave the bowl and then snag on the first rough joint. Sydney Water runs campaigns about this for a reason.
- Do not plant a fig or a willow over the sewer line. Worth knowing before you landscape: the trees that cause us the most work in Vaucluse were planted by people who had no idea where their drain ran.
- After the second blockage, stop clearing and start looking. Two blockages in a year is a pipe telling you something. A camera costs less than the third and fourth call-out combined.
The last one is the only real money-saver on the list. Clearing the same drain three times in a year is not maintenance: it is paying for the same job repeatedly and never fixing the thing causing it. Where the camera shows a cracked or root-damaged section, relining that length of pipe ends the cycle without digging up the garden.
Most blockages can wait until morning, and we will say so on the phone rather than charge you after-hours rates for something that is not moving anyway. Call it in straight away if:
- Sewage is coming up through a floor waste, a shower or an outside gully.
- The only toilet in the house is out of action.
- Water is backing up while you are actively using something: a washing machine mid-cycle will keep pumping into a blocked line.
- You can smell sewer gas indoors.
The first one especially. A gully overflowing outside is doing its job: it is a relief point, and it is telling you the main line is blocked. Sewage inside is a different matter and worth an after-hours callout.
